    Description

Antique Qing Dynasty Silk Embroidered Purse. Condition is Used.
The object is a hand sewn and embroidered container or flat pouch made of blue silk and finished at all edges with a black silk trim. The embroidery is done in very fine satin stitch in an exquisite manner. Both sides have designs of butterfly, flower and leaves. They open to reveal a hidden pocket on each side. The pocket is just short of holding a calling card. Remnants of an old label are attached to the back of one cover.
One of the most famous novels among the 18th Century vernacular literature is the Story of the Stone, also called Dream of the Red Chamber. The young ladies in the story would be doing embroidery. I can imagine them doing something like this. For what purpose would this object be used, I am not sure. But it is definitely done in the late Qing Dynasty - 1880's to 1910's.
Dating: late Qing Dynasty, 1880's to 1910's
Dimension: 4 inches by 4 inches
Condition: good condition relative to age and usuage. The top corners are frayed but no torn.
